“You’re glowing again,” Sloane said, and it took everything in me to break my eyes away from Bishop’s face and look at her instead.

It wasn’t just that he knew the name. No, it was that he knew who the man was, and likely, that he was X. I couldn’t say why I thought this, but an integral part of me just knew it. The betrayal was so fucking hurtful, all I wanted to do was slap the shit out of him. Right after I shot him a few times.

In the kneecaps, not the chest. Calm down.

“Did Azrael give you any other details?” I croaked, trying desperately not to haul across the room and kick Bishop in the balls.

“No, just that he was sorry he didn’t tell you sooner.”

I only nodded, because if I did anything else, I was going to cause a scene, and I’d just met these people.

“I know who he is,” Bishop murmured, and every eye seemed to find him at once.

“Son, I don’t know you,” Axel began, his drawl thick as molasses and just as deadly as a rattler, “but I’m gonna need you to be real specific on how you know this man and who he is to you.”

Bishop skirted one of the chairs in front of Emrys’ desk and plopped onto it. “He’s the second in command at headquarters in a position called ‘The Overseer.’ He’s my boss’s boss.”

My eyes welled with stupid, stupid tears, and I just couldn’t stay in that room anymore. I weaved through the assembled crowd, needing to be out of that space, away from Bishop, as fast as my feet would take me. It wasn’t just my mother that was corrupt. It was her boss, too. Maybe even Bishop.

How could he keep this from me? Did he know all this time? While I was spinning in a circle, chasing my fucking tail, was he just sitting there laughing at me?

One hot tear raced down my cheek, and it was all I could do not to sob my fucking eyes out. I’d thought Bishop was on my side. Dammit. How could he keep this from me?

“Wait,” Bishop called at my back, but I only moved faster, racing down the steps and taking them two at a time.

I needed to be out of this house, away from that man. I needed it more than air, more than breath.

Bishop closed a hand around my upper arm, and I spun on him, planting my fist in his solar plexus. He wasn’t expecting me to go on the offensive, and he tried and failed to suck in a breath. His fingers loosened, and I spun back around, my feet hitting the blood-soaked landing at the bottom of the steps.

“Darby, wait. I can explain,” he croaked, but I didn’t stop. I wasn’t going to let him lie to my face.

Not this time.

And then it was both arms around me from behind as he lifted me off my feet, the awful pull of him jumping through space and time yanking at my gut.
